Nessus is a multi-platform tool that allows network administrators to check for security vulnerabilities on a local network or personal computer, regardless of the operating system installed on the machines.

It does this by trying to detect the presence of a number of known vulnerabilities that are part of the extensive database of plugins.

Users can define their own security policies according to their needs, eliminating areas that do not affect the specific network with which they work. For example, you can get rid of Unix vulnerability analysis if you have a Microsoft Windows network.

The plugins tab under the edit or policy option lists all the resources that Nessus can edit that belong to different operating systems, network protocols, firewalls, SGBD, etc.
