Overview of the latest version of Rufus

Rufus is a top rated small easy tool for creating USB boot drives from Pete Batard. Great for creating a bootable operating system from an ISO (IMG) file. It is a tool that helps to format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB sticks / flash drives, memory cards, etc. It helps in the following conditions:

  • Creating USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • The BIOS or other DOS firmware is blinking
  • Work on a system that does not have the OS installed
  • Run the low-level utility

How to use Rufus

1- Download the executable file and run it – no installation is required.

# The executable file is digitally signed and the signature should state:

Akeo Consulting (v1.3.0 or later)
“Pete Batard – Open Source Developer” (v1.2.0 or older)

2- Notes on DOS support:

If you create a DOS boot drive and use a non-US keyboard, Rufus will try to select the keyboard layout according to your system’s locale. In this case, FreeDOS, which is the default selection, is recommended over MS-DOS because it supports multiple keyboard layouts.

3- Notes on ISO support:

All versions of Rufus from v1.1.0 allow the creation of a bootable USB from an ISO image (.iso).

However, creating an ISO image from a physical disc or set of files is very easy with a CD burning application such as the freely available CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn.

4- Notes on UEFI and GPT support:

As of version 1.3.2, Rufus supports both UEFI and GPT installation media, which means that it allows you to install Windows 7, Windows 8 or Linux in full EFI mode.

However, Windows Vista or later is required for full UEFI / GPT support. Due to a limitation of the Windows XP operating system, it restricts the creation of UEFI boot drives to MBR mode.
